Spiral guards and bamboo canes
Young hedge plants are prone to damage from rabbits, hares and herbicide. Plants can be protected with a spiral tree guard which wraps quickly into place with a bamboo cane for support.
The canes that Mill Farm Trees supply are heavy duty 12-14lb grade.
Buckle Tree Ties
A buckle tree tie secures a young tree to a stake without damage and holds the tree firm in wind and weather allowing the roots to establish quickly. It should be removed after three to four years once the tree is established.
Tree Shelters
Tree shelters are protective barriers placed around the base of young trees to shield them from potential threats and create a micro climate in which young plants can thrive. Tree shelters are a cylindrical shield that protects the plant’s trunk. They act as a physical barrier, preventing animals like deer, rabbits and hares from grazing on tender shoots and damaging the tree’s bark. Tree shelters also safeguard the tree from accidental contact with herbicides or chemicals, as well as protecting against mechanical damage caused by lawnmowers and other landscaping equipment.
Tree shelters are generally light green in colour, We supply a biodegradable version which is light brown.
Stakes
Stakes are long, sturdy supports driven into the ground near the base of young trees. They provide stability and prevent the tree from swaying or being uprooted by strong winds. Stakes are particularly important for newly planted trees that have not yet developed a robust root system. Properly aligned stakes ensure the tree grows upright and maintains its desired shape, especially when training trees or creating straight hedgerows.
Canes
Canes are flexible and slender supports used to guide the growth of young plants. They are made of bamboo and are necessary to support the spiral guard.
Why do young trees, hedges and shrubs need tree guards, stakes and canes?
Young trees, hedges, and shrubs benefit from guards, stakes, and canes during their early stages of growth and establishment. These accessories serve various essential purposes:
Protection from Animals: Tree guards, especially spiral guards, act as a physical barrier to protect young plants from animals like rabbits and hares. These animals may graze on tender shoots and bark, causing damage that can be detrimental to the plant’s health and growth.
Protection from Mechanical Damage: Guards and canes protect young trees from accidental damage caused by lawnmowers, trimmers, or other equipment used for maintenance and landscaping. This shielding is crucial during the initial years when the trees are vulnerable to physical impacts.
Wind Protection: Stakes and canes provide stability to young trees, hedges, and shrubs, preventing them from being uprooted or bent by strong winds. This support is essential until the plant develops a strong and sturdy root system.
Proper Alignment: Stakes and canes ensure that young trees grow upright and maintain their desired shape. Proper alignment is especially important for training trees and creating straight hedgerows.
Improved Growth: By offering support and protection, these accessories reduce stress on young plants, allowing them to focus their energy on healthy growth and root development. This leads to better establishment and faster growth rates.
Seasonal Protection: During winter, when frost and snow can pose risks to young plants, guards and canes provide additional protection, minimizing damage from freezing temperatures and harsh weather conditions.
Prevention of Herbicide Contact: Guards can also serve as a shield against accidental contact with herbicides or chemicals, which could harm or kill the young plants.
Overall, guards, stakes, and canes are essential tools in nurturing and safeguarding the growth of young trees, hedges, and shrubs. By providing the necessary support and protection, these accessories increase the chances of successful establishment and contribute to the long-term health and beauty of the landscape.
